THE
ATTRACTIONS
Ierapetra is a very beautiful city where you can see interesting attractions. Some of them are the museum ,the Mosque ,the
castle and the last one is the house where Napoleon stayed.
The museum was founded at the end of the 19th century. The museum collections include Minoan, Geometrical,
Archaical, Classical and Hellenistic Art. It is divided into two parts. The
first includes ceramics from prehistoric to Roman times and the Second mainly includes exhibits from the Roman
period. It also has vases of the Minoan and Classical Roman civilization.
The
collection of the shrines is very interesting. The copies of the classical
period in Roman time give us information
that were lost. Finally several exhibits were been stolen by collectors
or destroyed during the occupation
Venetian and Ottomans era. In the
Venetian age, from the 13th to
the 17th centuries,
Ierapetra-now known by its present name-became, prosperous again. The fortress
of Kales, built in the early years of the Venetian rule to protect the harbor,
is a remnant of this period, although a local myth says it was built by the
Genoese pirate Pescadores in 1212.In July 1798 Ierapetra made a small step into
world history when Napoleon stayed with a local family after the Battle
of the Pyramids.
